NEW DELHI – Responding to US President Donald Trump's additional 50% tariff warning, China on Tuesday said that resorting to pressure or issuing threats is not an appropriate way to engage, while expressing its intention to "play along till the end" if the US persists in the tariff war. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted that Beijing will do what is necessary to safeguard its legitimate and lawful rights and interests.
"Pressuring, threatening and extorting China is not the right way to engage with us. If the US insists on waging the tariffs and trade war regardless of the interest of both the countries and international community, China will play along till the end," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said at a press conference on Tuesday.
On Monday, Trump threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods effective Wednesday if Beijing fails to remove the 34% retaliatory tariffs imposed on imports from the US. Trump demanded that China withdraw the additional 34% tariffs by Tuesday.
On a question about negotiations with the US, Jian responded that Washington's attitude doesn't reflect willingness to engage in sincere dialogue.
"I think what the US has done doesn't reflect its willingness to engage in sincere dialogue. If the US really want to engage in talks it should show an attitude of equality, respect and mutual benefit. If the US decides to not care about the interest of US itself, China and rest of the world and it's determined to fight tariff and trade war, China will respond till the end," Jian said.
On Friday, the People's Republic of China announced 34% reciprocal tariff on all US goods from Thursday, in a tit-for-tat move after Trump last week imposed 34% tariff on Chinese goods, in addition to the 20% imposed earlier, taking the total tariffs to 54%.
On Thursday, China's foreign ministry 'firmly rejected' the US tariff and asserted that the US decision 'gravely violates' the World Trade Organization rules. "The US announced tariff hikes on imports from many countries, including China, under the pretext of reciprocity. This gravely violates World Trade Organization rules, and undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun had said. End
