NEW DELHI – The number of e-way bills generated rose 20.2% on year to a record high of 124.51 million in March, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network. In February, 111.64 million e-way bills were generated, 14.7% higher than a year ago.

The on-year growth of 20.2% in generation of e-way bills in March was the second-highest since October 2023, only surpassed by 23.1% rise seen in January.

The average on-year rise in e-way bills generated during Jan-Mar was 19.4%, the highest in the past 10 quarters, reflecting an improvement in economic activity.

An e-way bill is a GST document for transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. The number of e-way bills generated is taken as a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.

The increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust the following month, as most transactions are reflected in the next month's collections. GST collections rose 9.9% on year to INR 1.96 trillion in March, data released earlier this month showed.  End
