NEW DELHI - US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods if it fails to remove the 34% retaliatory tariffs it has imposed on imports from the US. Trump demanded that China withdraw the additional 34% of tariffs by Tuesday and threatened to impose an additional 50% if it fails to comply.
"...if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
"...China issued Retaliatory Tariffs of 34%, on top of their already record setting Tariffs, Non-Monetary Tariffs, Illegal Subsidization of companies, and massive long term Currency Manipulation, despite my warning that any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs, above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation, will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs, over and above those initially set," he said.
The US president also warned that he will terminate all talks with China concerning their requested meetings. However, he said negotiations with other countries that have requested meetings will begin taking place immediately.
On Friday, the People's Republic of China announced 34?ditional tariff on US goods from Apr. 10. The move was in response to Trump's decision to impose 34% reciprocal tariff on Chinese goods. The US president had announced 34% tariffs on China on Wednesday in addition to 20% imposed earlier, taking the total tariffs to 54%. China said the US practice is inconsistent with international trade rules and seriously damages its legitimate rights and interests.
On Thursday, China's foreign ministry 'firmly rejected' the US tariff and asserted that the US decision 'gravely violates' the World Trade Organization rules. "The US announced tariff hikes on imports from many countries, including China, under the pretext of reciprocity. This gravely violates WTO rules, and undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system. China firmly rejects this and will do what is necessary to defend our legitimate rights and interests," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun said.
"Protectionism leads nowhere. We urge the US to stop doing the wrong thing, and resolve trade differences with China and other countries through consultation with equality, respect and mutual benefit," Jiakun said.
According to media reports, China was also imposing export controls on rare earth elements, a crucial component for high-tech industries. These include samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium. End
