NEW DELHI – The government has increased the special additional excise duty on petrol and diesel by INR 2 per litre each, the finance ministry said in a notification Monday.
The excise duty on petrol has been increased to INR 13 per litre from INR 11 per litre, while the duty on diesel has been hiked to INR 10 per litre from INR 8 per litre. The increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel will come into effect from Tuesday.
Despite the increase in excise duty, state-owned oil marketing companies will not increase the retail prices of petrol and diesel, the oil ministry said in a post on social media platform X. "PSU (public sector undertaking) Oil Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail prices of #Petrol and #Diesel, subsequent to the increase effected in Excise Duty Rates today," the ministry said.
The development comes amid a fall in crude oil prices in recent weeks, with Brent crude oil futures slipping to below $65 per barrel. India's crude oil basket fell to $69.94 per barrel on Friday from $74.54 per barrel on Thursday. End
US$1 = INR 85.84
