NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet on Friday announced the extension of the Vibrant Village Programme, with an allocation of INR 68.39 billion, for the development of villages located in blocks near international land borders including those along China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and Pakistan. This is a centrally sponsored scheme.
Naming it the Vibrant Village Programme-II, or VVP-II, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that 2,000 villages will be covered under this plan that will continue till 2028-29 (Apr-Mar). "The programme aims to saturate all villages in such blocks in 4 thematic areas, namely all-weather road connectivity, telecom connectivity, television connectivity and electrification through convergence under existing scheme norms," Vaishnaw said.
The programme will be implemented in select strategic villages in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, the government said in a release.
Launched on Feb. 15, 2023, the government had approved the first leg of the scheme--Vibrant Villages Programme or VVP--for comprehensive development of the select villages in 46 blocks in 19 districts of abutting northern border in Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Ladakh.
