--Cabinet OKs INR-48.19-bln railway project in Maharashtra 

--Cabinet OKs INR 39.17 bln for railway projects in Odisha 


NEW DELHI - The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved four railway projects with a total cost of INR 186.58 billion, the government said in a release on Friday. The four projects will cover 15 districts in Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh and will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 1,247 kilometres, the government said. The four projects are expected to completed by 2030-31 (Apr-Mar).

 

The Cabinet has approved INR 87.41 billion for the rail projects in Chhattisgarh, INR 48.19 billion for projects in Maharashtra, and INR 31.17 billion and INR 11.81 billion for two separate projects in Odisha, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press conference detailing the Cabinet's decisions. 

 

"These are essential routes for transportation of commodities such as agriculture products, fertiliser, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, limestone etc. The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 88.77 million tonnes per annum," the government release said. "The railways being environment friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation, will help both in achieving climate goals and minimising logistics cost of the country, reduce oil import and lower CO2 emissions which is equivalent to plantation of 19 Crore (190 million) trees.  End
