AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) rose 4.3% on year to 854.9 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. Similar to the last few quarters, the rise in ports freight traffic was led by crude and petroleum products cargo volume, which was up 3.5% on year at 254.5 million tonnes in FY25. Crude and petroleum products account for more than one-third of the total cargo handled at all major ports across the country.

Other than crude oil, container traffic increased 6.6% on year in tonnage terms at 193.5 million tonnes in the recently concluded fiscal year, and thermal coal cargo volume rose 0.5% to 127.7 million tonnes.

The miscellaneous traffic for FY25 was up 30.6% on year at 117.7 million tonnes.

The cargo handled in Apr-Mar was under pressure due to lower coking coal volumes, which fell 9.2% on year to 59 million tonnes. The iron ore volumes were down 18.3% on year at 49.9 million tonnes. The finished fertilisers cargo FY25 was up 20.5% on year at 10 million tonnes and raw fertilisers were up 6.9% on year at 10.1 million tonnes.
