NEW DELHI – A full court of the Supreme Court decided that judges should make a declaration of their assets to the Chief Justice of India on assuming office and whenever any acquisition of a substantial nature is made. The Chief Justice of India will also make a declaration of the assets. However, putting the declaration on the website of the Supreme Court will be on a voluntary basis, the court said.

According to the apex court's website, 30 out of the 33 judges have already submitted their declaration of assets. However, these have not been uploaded on the website.

The apex court's step came after a huge pile of cash was allegedly recovered at the residence of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma in March. The top court had then formed a three-member committee to conduct an enquiry into allegations against Justice Varma. Justice Varma was not in town and his family members called the fire brigade, which found the cash and informed the police.

Justice Varma was subsequently transferred to Allahabad High Court even after the high court's bar association said they were not a "trash bin". Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has asked Allahabad High Court's Chief Justice Arun Bhansali not to assign any judicial work to Justice Varma.  End
