NEW DELHI – Wheat stocks with the Food Corp. of India were at 12.4 million tonnes as of Apr. 1, up 65% from a year ago, according to an official of the procurement agency. The increase in stocks is on account of higher procurement from early arrival in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, the official told Informst. The stocks as of Apr. 1 are sharply higher than the buffer norm of 7.5 million tonnes.
The FCI usually releases figures for wheat and rice stocks at the beginning of each month by the tenth of the next month. The procurement agencies have procured 748,000 tonnes of wheat so far in the 2025-26 rabi marketing season, up from 250,000 tonnes a year ago.
The wheat arrivals have been higher due to an increase in wheat production, the official said. The agriculture ministry has estimated wheat production in 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) to rise to a record 115.4 million tonnes from 113.3 million tonnes a year ago.
FCI is hopeful of meeting the wheat procurement target of 31.27 million tonnes for the rabi marketing season. Last year, the government bought only 26.61 million tonnes of wheat against the target of 30-32 million tonnes.
FCI and state agencies started wheat purchases early on Mar. 10 in Rajasthan and Mar. 15 in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, as against normal April normally.
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a bonus of INR 175 and Rajasthan INR 150 over and above the minimum support price of INR 2,425 per 100 kg. The Centre had hiked the MSP of wheat for the 2025-26 rabi season by INR 150 from INR 2,275 per 100 kg last year. End
