IMD sees wet spell, thunderstorms, lightning, over south India till Sat

MUMBAI – Under the influence of several weather systems and confluence of moist winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, a wet spell, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and winds with speeds of 40-50 km per hour, is likely over south peninsular India till Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department. Similar weather conditions are expected over central India, Maharashtra, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha on Thursday, it said.

 

The same weather systems are also predicted to cause hailstorms over parts of east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Telangana on Thursday, over Jharkhand on Friday, and over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Saturday, the weather department said. The department also expects heavy rainfall over isolated pockets of Kerala, Mahe, interior and coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh till Sunday.

 

Heat wave conditions are likely to continue in some parts of Saurashtra and Kutch till Tuesday. According to the agency, a fresh spell of heat waves is likely in parts of West Rajasthan from Sunday to Wednesday, in Gujarat from Sunday to Tuesday, and in east Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana from Monday to Wednesday. Hot and humid weather is also likely over Gujarat till Wednesday, and over Konkan and Goa from Saturday to Wednesday, it added.

 

Northwest India is likely to see a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3-5 degree Celsius in the next six days, the weather agency said, adding that maximum temperatures in central India are not seen rising in the next two days but may go up by 2-4 degree Celsius in the subsequent five days.

 

The weather department does not see significant change in maximum temperatures over west India in the next 24 hours but said the temperatures may rise 2-3 degrees Celsius thereafter. It also does not expect significant change in maximum temperatures in south peninsular India for the next three days but said they could rise by 2-3 degree Celsius in the subsequent four days. The agency added that it does not see a significant change in maximum temperatures for the rest of the country in the next seven days. End
