NEW DELHI – The Delhi High Court on Wednesday ordered Wikipedia to take down the alleged defamatory description of ANI Media Pvt. Ltd. from its platform based on an interim application filed by the news agaency.
The court was hearing a defamation suit filed by Asian News International against Wikipedia and its host Wikimedia Foundation, wherein it sought to restrain the latter from putting defamatory content against the news agency on its platform and remove the same. ANI also sought damages worth INR 20 million from the US non-profit organisation.
The high court on Tuesday said that prayer 2 and 3 by ANI Media in its interim application has been granted. Prayer 2 sought direction to respondents to remove allegedly defamatory content and restrain their users and administrators from publishing anything defamatory against the news agency. Prayer 3 seeks to remove the protection status imposed on the ANI's page in Wikipedia.
The Wikipedia page says that ANI "has been criticized for having served as a propaganda tool for the incumbent central government, distributing materials from a vast network of fake news websites, and misreporting events." ANI has said that respondents have allegedly published palpably false and defamatory content with malicious intent of tarnishing the news agency's reputation and to discredit its goodwill. End
