MUMBAI – The area under summmer crops across the country stood at 5.4 million hectares as of Friday, up 11% on year, according to data released by the agriculture ministry on Tuesday. The rise was supported by a steep increase in the area under maize. The acreage of maize, the largest coarse cereal grown during the season, rose to 622,000 hectares from 513,000 hectares a year ago.
The acreage of rice, the largest summer crop, rose 15% on year to 3.1 million hectares, which also pushed up the total acreage. The area under urad rose to 205,000 hectares from 170,000 hectares a year ago.
The acreage of bajra, the second-largest course cereal, fell to 229,000 hectares from 281,000 hectares a year ago. The area under all pulses rose 12% on year to 840,000 hectares from 750,000 hectares a year ago. Under pulses, moong acreage rose to 617,000 hectares from 567,000 hectares.
However, oilseeds acreage was down at 604,000 hectares from 632,000 hectares a year ago, the data showed. The area under sesamum, the major summer oilseed crop, was down 3% at 272,000 hectares. Groundnut acreage fell 4% on year to 296,000 hectares.
Currently, groundnut is not fetching higher returns for farmers, which is why they are shifting to other crops in most states, said Neharu Kher, managing director of Across Overseas Pvt Ltd. Farmers are shifting from groundnut to moong and urad in Gujarat and to maize in Rajasthan, said Ashok Virvani, a trader from Gujarat.
