IMD sees hailstorm in central, adjoining east India, heavy rain in south

MUMBAI – Multiple weather conditions will likely trigger hailstorms in central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chattisgarh, south interior Karnataka, Telangana, north interior Karnataka, Jharkhand, Odisha, and central Karnataka till Friday, the Indian Meteorological Department has said.

 

In addition, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Kerala, Mahe, south and north interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Karnataka, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam from Wednesday to Sunday, according to the weather department.

 

According to the weather bureau, due to the same weather systems, a wet spell with thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds, ranging from 30-60 kilometre per hour, is expected over Gujarat, Telangana, central India, Odisha, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema until Saturday.

 

Additionally, the department has issued a heatwave alert for parts of Saurashtra and Kutch till Wednesday, and for west Rajasthan from Saturday to Monday. It also forecast hot and humid conditions in isolated areas of Tripura until Thursday, in Assam from Thursday to Saturday, and in Gujarat from Thursday to Monday. The India Meteorological Department has also predicted warm night conditions for Vidarbha on Tuesday.

 

A gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3-5 degrees Celsius is likely over northwest India in the next seven days, the weather agency said. A gradual fall in maximum temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius is also predicted over central India and Maharashtra in the next three days, and a rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days, as per the weather bureau.

 

In south peninsular India, the weather department expects maximum temperatures to fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius in the next five days. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over the rest of the country during the next seven days, the India Meteorological Department added.  End
