NEW DELHI – As Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s sport utility vehicle sales grew in double digits year-on-year for the 24th consecutive month in March, the company's overall sales, including commercial vehicle sales and total exports, grew at the highest level annually since February 2024, according to its Tuesday stock exchange filing.

M&M sold 48,048 utility vehicles to dealerships in India in March, up 18% on year. In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), the company sold a record-high 551,487 sport utility vehicles domestically, up 20% annually, becoming the top sport utility vehicle-maker in India. The company was able to keep the inventory levels at dealerships in check, as its Vahan registrations grew 20% on year in FY25.

In what might indicate the changing of fortunes for India's commercial vehicle industry, M&M sold 23,951 commercial vehicles in March, up 14.4% on year. This is the highest on-year growth since October 2023. Yet in FY25, despatches of commercial vehicles grew at a paltry 2.4% to 269,087 units.

M&M despatched 3,530 sub-2-tonne light commercial vehicles in March, down 12%, but those with 2-3.5 tonnes grew 23% to 18,958 units. The despatches of light commercial vehicles of over 3.5 tonnes and medium-heavy commercial vehicles fell 4% on year to 1,463 units in March. The company crossed a market share of 50% in light commercial vehicles of over 3.5 tonnes. M&M sold 7,752 three-wheelers in March, 47% higher on year. In FY25, the company sold 85,832 three-wheelers to dealerships, up 11% on year.

M&M exported 4,143 units in March, up from 1,573 units a year ago. In FY25, it exported 34,709 units, 41% higher from the previous year.

FARM EQUIPMENT

The farm equipment sector of M&M clocked its highest-ever annual sales in FY25, the company said. In India, M&M sold 407,094 tractors in FY25 at an on-year growth of 12% and overseas, it sold 17,547 units, up 27% on year. Overall, it exported 424,641 units in FY25, registering an increase of 12% on year.

In March, it sold 32,582 units in India and exported 2,352 tractors. Overall, the company sold 34,934 tractors in March, up 34% on year. "The tractor industry has been witnessing good momentum on account of favorable weather conditions, good reservoir levels, strong rabi outlook and positive terms of trade for farmers," said Hemant Sikka, president of M&M's farm equipment business, in the release.

The delivery momentum, which picked up in the last week of March on account of festivities, is expected to continue in the first quarter of the ongoing financial year on expectations of a very good rabi crop harvest and improved cash flow in the hands of farmers, Sikka said.

M&M had reported a net profit of INR 29.64 billion for the December quarter on revenue of INR 305.38 billion. At 1118 IST, shares of the company traded at INR 2,644.55 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.8%.  End
