MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has predicted more than normal heatwave days in the country for Apr-Jun. The weather department Monday said it expects two-four days over and above the normal of four-seven days of heatwaves during the period over most parts of north and east peninsula, central India, east India and the plains of northwest India.

In particular, the weather agency has said above-normal heatwave days are very likely over Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, northern Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu during Apr-Jun.

A heat wave occurs when the temperatures reach at least 40 degree Celsius or more in plains, 37 degree Celsius or more in coastal regions, and at least 30 degree Celsius or more in hilly regions.

Similarly, in April, more than normal heatwave days are likely over parts of east and central India and adjoining peninsular India. In the above-mentioned areas, three-six days of heat wave conditions are expected against the normal of one-three days in April, the weather bureau said. The most prone areas are likely to be Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, east Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and northern Karnataka.

In Apr-Jun, above-normal maximum temperatures are seen over most parts of the country, except some parts of west peninsular India and some pockets of of east-central and east India, where normal maximum temperatures are very likely, IMD said. Minimum temperatures are also expected to be above-normal over most of the country during the period, it said.

In April, above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country, except some parts of extreme south peninsular India and northwest India, where normal maximum temperatures are likely, the agency said. Minumum temperatures are also expected to be above-normal over most of the country, besides some parts of northwest and northeast India where normal to belownormal minimum temperatures are likely during the month, it said.

Despite above-normal temperatures predicted for the summer season, the weather department has ruled out the likelood of El Nino during the period. Currently, the El Nino-Southern Oscillation is transitioning from weak La Nina condition to a neutral state, the department said. El Nino-Southern Oscillation-neutral conditions are likely to prevail in April, May, and June, after which weak La Nina conditions could prevail, IMD said.

The El Nino-Southern Oscillation refers to the fluctuation between El Nino and La Nina conditions in the Pacific Ocean. El Nino is linked to drier and hotter weather in India, while La Nina results in more favourable rainfall.

The IMD said the Indian Ocean Dipole is expected to remain neutral during Apr-Jun. The Indian Ocean Dipole is the difference in sea surface temperatures between the eastern and western tropical Indian Ocean. A negative Indian Ocean Dipole leads to less rainfall in India and vice versa.

In terms of rainfall, IMD has projected that India is likely to receive normal precipitation during April at 88-112% of long period average. The long-period average of rainfall over the country during April based on data from 1971 to 2020 is about 39.2 mm.

The forecast suggests that normal to above-normal rainfall is likely over most parts of northwest India, westcentral India, peninsular India, northeast India, and northeast India. Also, northeast India is likely to receive normal-to-above normal rainfall, and the weather agency has warned of the occurance of landslides and floods in the region after Apr. 10.

Below normal rainfall is expected in the rest of the country during April, IMD said.  End
