India Apr-Feb major subsidies spending up 7.5% to INR 3.63 tln

NEW DELHI – The government's expenditure on major subsidies in Apr-Feb rose 7.5% on year to INR 3.630 trillion, data from the Controller General of Accounts showed. The expenditure accounted for 95% of the revised estimate of INR 3.834 trillion for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), compared with 87% in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

 

The food subsidy bill rose 9.2% on year to INR 1.862 trillion in Apr-Feb, which accounted for 94% of the allocation for the year. On the other hand, the government's spending on petroleum subsidies rose sharply on year by 59% to INR 110.81 billion in Apr-Feb, and accounted for 66% of the revised estimate. 

 

As per the revised estimates detailed in the Budget for FY26, the government's food subsidy bill is projected at INR 1.974 trillion and petroleum subsidy outgo is projected at INR 147 billion.  

 

The government's expenditure on fertiliser subsidies rose 3.4% to INR 1.657 trillion in the first 11 months of the year. The revised projection for fertiliser subsidy is INR 1.657 trillion.
