--CONTEXT: Govt had set sugar sales quota for March at 2.3 mln tn
MUMBAI – The Centre has set the domestic sugar sales quota for April at 2.35 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X Thursday. The quota for the upcoming month is 2.2% higher than last month, but down 6% from 2.5 million tonnes last year.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. The government sets monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill. A lower quota restricts mills from selling the sugar they have produced.
Market players were anticipating the April sales quota to be 2.35 million tonnes to 2.40 million tonnes amid strong demand anticipated in April, particularly from large-scale consumers such as ice cream and soft drink manufacturers as the summer season intensifies, Informist had earlier reported.
Sugar production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) is expected to fall 17% to 26.5 million tonnes from 31.9 million tonnes last year, due to fall in sugarcane yield of major producing states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, according to the All India Sugar Trade Association. End
