NEW DELHI – The Punjab government Friday told the Supreme Court that Bhartiya Kisan Union Ekta Sidhupur President Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who had been on a fast-unto-death since Nov. 26, seeking agricultural reforms, has accepted water on Friday and broken his fast. The state government told the court that they have cleared the Shambhu and Khanauri border sites where farmer protests were on since February last year.
Advocate General Gurminder Singh, appearing for the Punjab government, said the committee appointed by the apex court to look into the issues raised by agitating farmers has done a commendable job, and its recommendation can be sent to the central government directly. The apex court asked the committee to submit its next supplementary report to them.
Earlier, Dallewal had gone on an indefinite hunger strike at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana, demanding a legal guarantee of minimum support price for all crops. This protest drew significant attention due to his deteriorating health during the strike. In December, the top court had pulled up the Punjab government for not conducting medical tests on Dallewal. In January, Dallewal had accepted medical aid but continued his fast-unto-death, refusing meals until the demands were met.
The top court was hearing a petition by the Haryana government against the Punjab and Haryana High Court's order in July directing the state government to open the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border within a week. Last year, several farmers from Punjab began a march towards Delhi pressing various demands, including a legal guarantee on the minimum support price for all crops. The Supreme Court had in September formed a committee to look into the issues raised by the agitating farmers and cautioned them to stay away from political parties and promises that cannot be implemented. The committee will look into the modalities of resolving the issues raised by the agitating farmers, the court had said. End
