US says Ukraine and Russia agree to 'ensure safe navigation' in Black Sea

MUMBAI – Ukraine and Russia have agreed with the US to "ensure safe navigation, eliminate the use of force, and prevent the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea," according to two readouts published by The White House Tuesday. The White House published the outcome of dicussions between expert groups of all the three nations on Black Sea in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, held during Sunday and Tuesday.
The White House also said both the countries agreed to "develop measures for implementing..., ban strikes against energy facilities of Russia and Ukraine." The US will also work with both countries towards "achieving a durable and lasting peace," the statements read.
According to the Ukraine-specific readout, The White House said, "the United States remains committed to helping achieve the exchange of prisioners of war, the release of civilian detainees, and the return of forcibly transferred Ukrainian children."
The White House in Russia-specific statement said the US will help Russia restore its access to the world market for agricultural and fertiliser exports, lower maritime insurance costs, and enhance access to ports and payment systems for such transaction.
"The United States reiterated President Donald J. Trump's imperative that the killing on both sides of the Russia-Ukraine conflict must stop, as the necessary step toward achieving an enduring peace settlement," according to both the readouts. "To that end, the United States will continue facilitating negotiations between both sides to achieve a peaceful resolution, in line with the agreements made in Riyadh." End
