MUMBAI – Production of crude steel in India rose 6.3% on year to 12.7 million tonnes in February, according to data from the World Steel Association. During the month, the country accounted for around 8.8% of the total global steel output.

Globally, crude steel output fell 3.4% on year to 144.7 million tonnes last month because of a decline in production from China, Japan, the US, Russia, Turkey, Brazil, Germany, and Iran. India and South Korea were the only ones in the top 10 steel-producing countries to report on-year growth in production in February.

China, the world's largest producer, reported a decline in crude steel output by 3.3% on year to 78.9 million tonnes. China's production of crude steel accounted for over 54% of global output. In Japan, crude steel output fell by 8.5% on year to 6.4 million tonnes, while production in South Korea rose marginally by 0.7% to 5.2 million tonnes.

The US produced 6 million tonnes of steel in February, down 7% on year, while output in Turkey fell by 5.6% to 2.9 million tonnes. Steel production in Germany declined by 13.5% to 2.7 million tonnes in February.
