Govt says 47,674 direct tax defaulters untraceable, INR 5.91 tln involved

NEW DELHI – The government has declared 47,674 direct tax defaulters as "untraceable" as of Jan. 31 with tax amount involving nearly INR 5.91 trillion, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written response to the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
On the indirect tax front, the government declared 60,853 assesses as "untraceable" defaulters, involving tax amount of INR 435.25 billion. Chaudhary, however, did not specify the date since when the finance ministry has declared these assessees untraceable.
In his response, Chaudhary also listed host of measures undertaken by the ministry to recover dues from tax defaulters, including--for direct taxes--making available database like Individual Transaction Statement and 360-degree profile generated by the department and those maintained by other agencies like FIU-IND to the field units for identification of assets for recovery.
On the indirect tax side, he said the government was involving local authorities as well as central agencies to identify investment patterns of defaulters to determine their liabilities and actual incomes. End
