NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation must rejuvenate legacy data using emerging technologies to make it artificial intelligence-ready, Secretary Saurabh Garg has said.
"The vast volume of administrative data in India presents a unique opportunity to integrate it with alternate datasets to meet the increasing expectations of data users," Garg said at a workshop on 'Emerging Trends in Public Data and Technology for Research and Policy' at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
Garg said that institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad could play a pivotal role in helping the governemnt make legacy data AI-ready. The secretay had said in February that the statistics ministry was working to integrate its surveys for data collection with chatbots enabled by AI.
At the workshop, IIM Ahmedabad Director Bharat Bhaskar said AI had a transformative potential in policy formulation. However, Bhaskar cautioned against inherent biases that might arise from historical data patterns.
The statistics ministry and IIM Ahemdabad signed a memorandum of understanding, which will serve as a framework for collaborative efforts in data innovation, ensuring that academic research contributes effectively to policy development, the ministry said in a release. End
