--SEBI doubles FPI equity AUM threshold to INR 500 bln for extra disclosures

--CONTEXT: Decisions at SEBI's board meeting held Monday

MUMBAI – The Securities and Exchange Board of India Monday raised the threshold limit for foreign portfolio investors to make additional disclosures to INR 500 billion from INR 250 billion of equity assets under management in Indian markets. Thus, FPIs holding more than INR 500 billion of equity assets under management will now be required to make additional disclosures, the market regulator said, as its board approved the proposal to increase the threshold under size criteria in the additional disclosure framework.

This decision was announced considering how trading volumes in the cash equity market have more than doubled between 2022-23 (Apr-Mar), when the previous limit was set, and FY25. SEBI had directed FPIs, either individually or as an investor group, holding more than INR 250 billion of equity assets under management in Indian markets to disclose details of all entities holding any ownership, economic interest, or control, on a full look through basis, without any thresholds, as per a circular dated Aug. 24, 2023. This was done to prevent any large-sized FPI from disrupting the orderly functioning of the market by their actions.  End
