MUMBAI – The coal ministry Monday said it has successfully auctioned twelve mines in the 11th round of coal mine auctions for commercial mining. The 12 mines comprise eight fully explored mines and four partially explored coal mines. Successful bidders at the auction included Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. and Jindal Power Ltd.

Jindal Steel won a mine in Odisha with a geological reserve of around 3,257.89 million tonnes, while Jindal Power got a mine in Chhattisgarh with reserves of around 1,376.08 million tonnes.

These 12 mines collectively hold a geological reserve of around 5,759.23 million tonnes, with a cumulative peak rated capacity of 15.46 million tonnes per annum, excluding partially explored mines, the ministry said in a release. The newly auctioned mines are estimated to generate an annual revenue of INR 33.3 billion, excluding the partially explored mines, and attract a capital investment of around INR 23.2 billion.

Additionally, these mines are expected to create 20,902 employment opportunities, the release said. The coal ministry has auctioned a total of 125 coal mines, with a production capacity of 273.06 million tonnes per year, since the inception of commercial coal mining in 2020.
