NEW DELHI – Domestic airlines carried 14.04 million passengers in February, up over 11% year-on-year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a filing last week.
During the month, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s budget carrier IndiGo carried 8.9 million passengers, compared to 7.6 million passengers in the same month a year ago and 9.5 million in January, data show. While the airline continued to dominate Indian skies with a market share of 63.7% in February, this was lower than 65.2% in January, though still higher than 60.1% in February 2024.
The Air India group, which completed its consolidation with AIX Connect, Air India Expres, and Vistara late last year, carried 3.8 million passengers in February, compared to 3.8 million passengers in January. It continued to trail IndiGo in market share, at 27.3% in February. This was, however, higher than the 25.7% market share the group registered in January.
With a market share of 4.7% in February, Akasa Air currently holds the third spot in terms of market share. Its market share for the month was 3.2%, unchanged from January but sharply lower than 5.2% in February 2024.
The passenger load factor of IndiGo improved to 91.7% in February from 89.8% in January. This metric is used to measure the available seating capacity filled with passengers. Air India's passenger load factor, including Air India and Air India Express, rose to 87.2% in February from 84.4% the previous month. While SpiceJet's passenger load factor improved to 91.2% in February from 87.1% the month ago, Akasa Air's improved to 95.1% from 93.7%.
In February, 821 passenger-related complaints were received by scheduled domestic airlines compared to 791 a year ago, the regulator said. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers in February was 0.58, lower than 0.63 a year ago. Fly Big and Alliance Air received the highest and second-highest complaints, respectively. Nearly 42% of the passenger complaints were related to flight problems, data shows.
The on-time performance of IndiGo was 80.2% in February, followed by 78.6% for Akasa Air, 73.4% for Air India Group, 59% for SpiceJet, and 53.7% for Alliance Air. This performance is computed for six airports – Bengaluru, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
