NEW DELHI – Nearly 87% of the 200 sugar mills in Maharashtra halted operations for the season as of Thursday, according to the Sugar Commissionerate. During the corresponding period last year, only 114 mills had shut operations, the data showed. The rise in closures this year is attributed to lower availability of sugarcane and a decline in the sugar recovery rate.
As of Thursday, 173 mills were shut across the state. Solapur recorded the highest number of closures, with 45 mills shutting down. Kolhapur saw 40 mills close, while Pune and Nanded had 24 closures each, and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar had 19 units shut, among others.
The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories has said that the sugarcane crushing season in most sugar-producing states will conclude this month. At the same time, mills in Uttar Pradesh will end operations by mid-April, the federation stated. According to the federation, the mills are closing operations early because of lower availability of cane and a decline in the sugar recovery rate.
As a result of fewer mills operating, sugar production in Maharashtra declined 25% to 7.9 million tonnes as of Thursday, compared with 10.5 million tonnes a year ago, according to data from the commissionerate. Meanwhile, the state's average sugar recovery rate has fallen to 9.45% from 10.18% last year, the data showed.
For the current sugar season, which ends in September, Maharashtra is projected to produce just 8.0 million tonnes of sugar, against 11.0 million tonnes last year, according to the federation. It has estimated that the overall sugar production in the country in the ongoing season will be 25.9 million tonnes, down 19% from 31.9 million tonnes produced last year. End
