MUMBAI – India's coal production in the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) has surpassed 1 billion tonnes as of Mar. 20, the Ministry of Coal said in a release Friday. In FY24, the country had produced 997.83 million tonnes of coal.
India relies on coal for around 55% of its energy mix and around 74% of the country's electricity is generated by coal-based power plants, the release said. India's coal imports declined by 8.4% in Apr-Dec, resulting in foreign exchange savings of around $5.43 billion or INR 423.15 billion, it said.
"The coal sector's success is attributed to the tireless efforts of Coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), private players, and the dedicated workforce of around 500,000 mine workers across more than 350 coal mines," the ministry said in the release. End
