NEW DELHI – The Indian government has sought clarifications from Elon Musk-owned xAI on some of the responses by its generative artificial intelligence chatbot Grok, sources said. The move follows controversial statements made by Grok on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party. The government has asked xAI to explain how the responses are being generated by the chatbot and how the large language model was being trained, sources aware of the development said.

Grok has become an internet sensation with its humorous, insightful and sometimes controversial responses. Several memes were being shared on X, formerly Twitter, on the responses given by Grok. The chatbot, while answering some questions, used slang words and even a rude tone.

It also made some controversial statements. Responding to a question by an X user, it called Modi one of the most communal politicians in the country. According to raw data compiled by Grok, it answered nearly 350,000 to 500,000 questions over the past week in India.

Grok is an AI, modelled after 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' and is intended to answer almost anything and even suggest questions to ask. "Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don't use it if you hate humor," xAI had said in a blog post announcing Grok.

The latest version of the chatbot - Grok 3 – was introduced in February this year. Grok-3, trained on a massive dataset comprising 12.8 trillion tokens, draws from publicly accessible internet data, legal texts, and court documents. A notable distinction lies in Grok's real-time access to X posts, which grants it up-to-date knowledge. End
