NEW DELHI – To boost growth of the livestock sector, the Union Cabinet has approved an additional outlay of INR 10 billion for implementing the revised Rashtriya Gokul Mission, taking the total to INR 34 billion. The outlay is set for the 15th Finance Commission cycle from 2021-22 to 2025-26, the Cabinet said in a release on Wednesday.

The mission will provide implementing agencies a one-time assistance of 35% of the capital cost for setting up heifer rearing centres. Farmers will get 3% interest subvention on loans taken to buy high genetic merit IVF heifers, according to the release.

Rashtriya Gokul Mission aims to strengthen cattle breeding farms through an artificial insemination network, bull production programme, and an accelerated breed improvement programme using sex-sorted semen. With the implementation of the mission, production has increased by 63.5% in the last 10 years. The availability of milk per person has also increased to 471 grams per day in 2023-24 from 307 grams per day in 2013-14, the release added.

To improve milk procurement, the Cabinet also approved an additional outlay of INR 10 billion under the revised National Program for Dairy Development from 2021-22 till 2025-26, taking the total to INR 27.9 billion. The initiative focuses on improving market access for farmers, supply chain efficiency, and value addition.

The dairy development programme is dedicated to improving essential dairy infrastructure--milk chilling plants, advanced milk testing laboratories, and certification systems. The programme will also continue to foster dairy development through cooperation with the Japanese government and Japan International Cooperation Agency.  End
