--Govt source: Think 12% safeguard duty on steel imports is enough
NEW DELHI – A safeguard duty of 12% on steel imports, recommended by the trade ministry's Directorate General of Trade Remedies, is sufficient to protect the domestic industry from overseas dumping, a trade ministry official said. There were expectations that the ministry would recommend a duty of 25%.
The official said that the ministry recommended the duty after conducting a thorough investigation. The government had received a complaint from the Indian Steel Association regarding a recent, sharp, and significant rise in imports of non-alloy and alloy steel flat products into India, which posed a serious threat to the domestic industry and producers of these products.
The Directorate General of Trade Remedies has also invited comments on the preliminary findings within 30 days. The finance ministry will soon take a final call on the duty, the official said, without giving a timeline. End
