NEW DELHI – InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. Wednesday said that 925 aircraft it ordered are yet to be delivered by European aerospace major Airbus. The delivery backlog dates back to 2015, when the company placed an order for 250 Airbus A320 Neo jets, IndiGo-owner InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. said in an investor presentation ahead of an analyst meeting. This update comes a day after Air India's Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson warned that aircraft shortage could persist for at least four to five years due to supply snags at the jet makers' end.

Of the 250 A320 Neo aircraft ordered by IndiGo in 2015, only 165 were delivered. Another 810 Airbus A320Neo aircraft ordered in 2019 and 2023 are yet to be delivered. The company placed an order for 30 Airbus A350 aircraft in 2024. In all, IndiGo has placed orders for 1,420 aircraft since 2005, of which, 65% remain undelivered. However, the airline reiterated its guidance of doubling its fleet count to over 600 by 2030.

As of Feb. 28, the low-cost carrier's fleet count was 439, including those signed on damp leases. Under a damp lease agreement, the lessor provides the aircraft along with maintenance services while the lessee provides the crew and insurance.

IndiGo is banking its growth prospects on expectations of a potential doubling in the number of passengers by 2030. In its presentation, the company said India's domestic seats per capita stood at 0.13 in 2024, compared with 0.42 in Vietnam, 0.56 in Brazil, 0.59 in China, and 3.09 in the US. In terms of international seats, India ranks lower with 0.06 seats per capita, behind China's 0.11, the US 0.88, the UK's 4.42, and the UAE's 17.51. InterGlobe Aviation expects India will become the fifth-largest international outbound tourism market by 2027. The data for the US is based on 2023 figures.

InterGlobe Aviation's first damp-leased wide-body Boeing 787 began operations in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). The company announced that three more Boeing 787s will start operations in FY26. Additionally, the delivery of the Airbus A321 XLR, used for mid-haul international routes, is expected in FY26.

InterGlobe Aviation has placed an order with Airbus for 30 A350 aircraft, with the first delivery expected in FY28. Both the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 are used for long-haul international routes.

The company plans to increase its international capacity to 40% by FY30 from the current 28%. Since 2015, IndiGo has added 35 new international destinations to its routes.

After reporting a profit after tax of INR 82 billion in FY24, the company anticipates a decline to INR 61 billion in FY25. Excluding the impact of foreign exchange fluctuations, the bottom line for FY25 is projected to be INR 80 billion, down from INR 89 billion a year ago.

For the December quarter, InterGlobe Aviation reported a net profit of INR 24.42 billion on revenue of INR 221.11 billion. On Wednesday, shares of the company closed at INR 4,980.55 on the National Stock Exchange, up 3.6%.  End
