NEW DELHI – India hopes to expand the existing preferential trade agreement with the Latin American bloc MERCOSUR and cover at least 75% of the tariff lines under the agreement, a commerce ministry official said. The MERCOSUR bloc comprises Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
While India had started the discussions to expand the preferntial trade agreement with MERCOSUR in 2023, there hasn't been much progress yet. Another commerce ministry official said that MERCOSUR's enthusiasm to expand the trade pact has been mild, which is responsible for the slow progress.
India-MERCOSUR preferential agreement, which was signed in 2004, covers around 450 tariff lines currently. The trade between the two sides was $17.86 billion in 2023-24 (Apr-Mar), that included exports worth $7.90 billion. End
