NEW DELHI - The proceedings of Lok Sabha were adjourned for the day following protests by the Opposition parties over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech on the success of the Mahakumbh that concluded last month. There were protests as Speaker Om Birla didn't allow Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to speak in the House after the prime minister's address.

The Opposition members raised objections over the prime minister's address to the House and alleged that he spoke without prior notice. Birla, however, stated that Modi spoke under Rule 372 of the procedure, which allows the prime minister and ministers to speak in the House.

Modi concluded his address at 1219 IST and left the House. Meanwhile, Gandhi stood up and requested that he be allowed to speak, but the chair turned down his demand.

Soon after, the Opposition members entered the well of the House and raised slogans against the government. Amidst the chaos, the chair adjourned the proceedings till 1300 IST. After the House reassembled, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw replied on the Demands for Grants under the control of the Ministry of Railways for 2025-26 amidst the protest.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju slammed the Congress party saying that the smaller parties don't get time to speak on important issues due to the uproar by the Congress members. The Opposition parties continued with their protests, leading the Chair to adjourn the House till Wednesday.

Earlier, Modi lauded citizens' efforts for the grand success of the Mahakumbh. He said the Mahakumbh showcased India's grandeur to the world. "Mahakumbh is a manifestation of the collective resolve, devotion, and dedication of the people, inspired by their unwavering faith", Modi said.

"Prayagraj Mahakumbh is a significant milestone that reflects the spirit of an awakened nation."

The prime minister, however, didn't mention the stampede at Mahakumbh, which resulted in 30 deaths as per the Uttar Pradesh government. Another stampede at New Delhi railway station resulted in several deaths and injuries.

"Kumbh is our tradition, history, and culture. I wanted to support what the prime minister said. But there was one thing, the prime minister did not pay condolences to people who lost their lives in Kumbh. Those who went to Kumbh also want employment, the prime minister should also speak on employment. The leader of opposition should be given permission to speak, but I guess it is a new India, Gandhi told reporters outside the House.  End
