Summer crop acreage up 11.3% on yr at 4.2 mln ha as of Thursday

MUMBAI – The area under summmer crops across the country stood at 4.2 million hectares as of Thursday, up 11.3% on year, according to data from the agriculture ministry released on Monday. The area under summer crops a year ago was 3.8 million hectares.
The acreage of rice, the largest summer crop, was 2.8 million hectares as of Thursday, up 12.3% on year from 2.5 million hectares a year ago. On the other hand, the area under maize, the largest coarse cereal grown during the season, fell to 286,000 hectares from 299,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage of bajra, the second-largest course cereal, fell to 84,000 hectares from 93,000 hectares a year ago.
The area under all pulses rose nearly 26% on year to 573,000 hectares from 455,000 hectares a year ago. Under pulses, moong acreage rose to 427,000 hectares from 365,000 hectares.
The area under urad rose to 132,000 hectares from 81,000 hectares a year ago. The government has extended duty-free imports of urad by another year till Mar. 31, 2026, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification on Mar. 10.
Oilseeds acreage was unchanged at 371,000 hectares, the data showed. The area under sesamum, the major summer oilseed crop, was at 137,000 hectares, higher than 134,000 hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage rose slightly to 208,000 hectares from 207,000 hectares a year ago.
