NEW DELHI – Oil marketing companies have achieved a 19.68% ethanol blending with petrol in February, Minister of State Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi said. As of Feb. 28, cumulative blending in the 2024-25 ethanol supply year that began in November has reached 17.98%, Gopi said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

To reduce dependence on crude oil, the government has set a target of achieving 18% blending in 2024-25 and 20% in 2025-26. To achieve the 20% blending aim, India needs about 10.16 billion litres of ethanol. In the ongoing ethanol supply year, most ethanol is set to come from grain-based feedstock like rice and maize, which have the higher allocation.

Under the blending programme, oil companies have saved more than INR 1.2 trillion of foreign exchange, about 62 million tonnes of carbon emissions and INR 1.04 trillion paid to farmers up to January, the minister said.

Ethanol production plants including second-generation and third-generation plants are primarily set up by companies or cooperative societies, depending upon the techno-economic viability of the project as per their investment plans, Gopi said. Under the PM JI-VAN Yojana, the maximum financial assistance of INR 1.5 billion per project for commercial projects and INR 150 million per project for demonstration has been set for developing the production of 2G and 3G ethanol, he said.  End
