NEW DELHI - Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday launched a mobile application for the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme, at Parliament House in New Delhi. The mobile application will make it easier for the eligible individuals to apply for internships in the various companies.

The mobile application provides a personalised dashboard, access to dedicated support team, easy registration through Aadhaar face authentication. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs said that the users can also explore the referral programme with this application, which was recently announced by the ministry. The referral programme would enable the registered youth to refer other eligible candidates for the scheme and win rewards, the ministry said.

Following the launch, Sitharaman said that the mobile application will make the scheme more accessible to the applicants.

She said the government expected top 500 companies to give exposure to the students, who are not coming from renowned institutions and big cities, so that they understand the scope of job and how much additional skills they have to acquire.

The Prime Minister's Internship Scheme was announced in the Budget 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). It aimed to provide internship to 10 million youth in top 500 companies in five years. The pilot project targeted at providing 125,000 internship opportunities to youth and was launched on Oct. 3 last year. Under the scheme, students get 12 month paid internship in top companies. Each intern will be supported with monthly financial assistance of INR 5,000, supplemented by one-time financial assistance of INR 6,000, the ministry said. In the first round of the pilot project, Oct-Dec, the ministry said, over 127,000 opportunities in about 745 districts were posted by around 280 companies across 25 sectors. Over 82,000 offers were made to the candidates, the ministry said.

"The round II of the Pilot Project commenced in January 2025 and about 327 companies have posted more than 1.18 lakh (118,000) opportunities (both new and edited unfilled opportunities of the previous round) across the country. Of these, around 37,000 opportunities are for graduates, 23,000 for ITI holders, 18,000 for diploma holders, 15,000 for 12th-grade and 25,000 are available for candidates with 10th qualifications," the ministry said.

"Opportunities spanning across various sectors such as automobile, travel & hospitality, banking & finance etc. and varied job roles, such as sales and marketing, technical roles for ITI passouts, HR internships, and more, have been provided.

"These opportunities are spread across 735 districts in all states and Union territories of the country," the ministry said.

The government has also taken initiatives to enhance access to and spread awareness about the PM Internship Scheme in the round II of the pilot project. "A framework for assessment of the implementation of the Pilot Project, and to acknowledge and reward the efforts of the state and UTs in the implementation of the scheme, has been introduced in round II," the ministry said.  End
