NEW DELHI – Mills have dispatched 150,834 tonnes of sugar to ports as of Tuesday in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep), All India Sugar Trade Association said in a release Monday. The government has allowed sugar mills to export 1 million tonnes in 2024-25.
Of the 81,307 tonnes of sugar exported, the lion's share is white sugar at 73,752 tonnes, followed by 6,723 tonnes of refined sugar, the association said, quoting data from the Mumbai-based trading house Dr. Amin Controllers Pvt. Ltd. India has dispatched 832 tonnes of raw sugar as of Tuesday, it said. Of the total sugar exports, 40% was to Sri Lanka, 22.2% to Afghanistan, 8.5% to Djibouti, and 8.0% to the United Arab Emirates.
About 69,527 tonnes of sugar is waiting at Indian ports to be loaded as of Tuesday, according to the trade body. The exports are amid concerns about lower sugar production in the ongoing sugar season.
As of Tuesday, mills have contracted some 650,000 tonnes of sugar with trade houses, Praful Vithalani, chairman of the association told Informist.
The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories has cut its sugar output estimate for the season ending September to 25.9 million tonnes. Earlier this month, the federation had estimated sugar output at 26.5 million tonnes, and 27.0 million tonnes in January. Sugar output last year was 31.9 million tonnes.
"The 2024-25 sugar season, right from the beginning was stuck in the midst of constantly changing estimates of sugarcane availability and expected sugar production. The state of ambiguity in sugar production numbers still persists even today," the federation said Sunday.
Since early estimates signalled comfortable sugar availability in the country, the government allowed mills to export 1 million tonnes in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep). The industry had urged the government to allow exports of 2 million tonnes. "This decision (to export) definitely helped in improving the sugar price realisations," the federation said.
Meanwhile, India produced 23.7 million tonnes of sugar as of Saturday, down 16.3% on year from 28.3 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to the federation. End
