India's gems, jewellery exports down 25.6% on year to $2.09 bln in February

MUMBAI – India's gems and jewellery net exports fell 25.6% on year to $2.09 billion in February, while net imports declined 40% on year to $1.36 billion, according to data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. The export of gems and jewellery on a gross basis declined 23.5% on year to $2.42 billion in February.

 

The country's net gems and jewellery exports in Apr-Feb was down 12.6% from a year ago to $21.28 billion, while gross exports declined to $25.73 billion from $29.74 billion a year ago. India's net gems and jewellery imports in Apr-Feb fell 13.3% on year to $17.50 billion, the data showed.

 

India exported 1.74 million carats of cut and polished diamonds in February, down from 1.87 million carats a year ago. Exports of cut and polished diamonds in Apr-Feb were 15.1 million carats, down from 17.3 million carats in the same period last year.

 

The country's import of rough diamonds in February fell to 7.65 million carats from 15.22 million carats a year ago. Imports of rough diamonds in Apr-Feb fell to 90.60 million carats from 113.95 million carats a year ago, the data showed.

 

Silver jewellery exports in January plummeted 53.2% on year to $47.82 million. Silver jewellery exports in Apr-Feb dropped 42% to $892.05 million.

 

India imported gold bars worth $299.97 million in February, up 21.4% from a year ago, the data showed. Imports of gold bars in Apr-Feb soared 34% to $3.57 billion. The country imported $35.89 million of gold jewellery in February, down from $107.11 million a year ago, while imports of gold jewellery in Apr-Feb rose 10% to $931.09 million.
