MUMBAI – Adverse demand conditions in the domestic market led to a decline of 6.4% on year in automobile despatches in February, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Thursday. While exports recorded growth, this was the lowest in seven months.
Domestic passenger vehicle despatches to dealers rose 1.9% on year to 377,689 units in February. Companies manufactured 404,193 units of passenger vehicles in February, 4.5% higher than 386,741 units a year ago. Sport utility vehicles continue to be attractive while demand for passenger cars tapered off.
Sales of utility vehicles to dealers grew a tad over 9% to 208,795 units, showing strong growth within the category of passenger vehicles. Indian automobile companies together exported a total of 31,388 units of utility cars in February which is up nearly 44% on year. Despatches of passenger cars in February fell 4.3% on year to 110,966 units. Exports of passenger cars fell almost 23% on year to 24,248 units.
Domestic depatches of vans in February fell 5.4% on year to 11,493 units, while exports grew 27.8%. In February, Indian original equipment manufacturers focussed more on the production of utility vehicles, given their high demand, but slowed that of passenger cars and vans. Overall two-wheeler wholesales in India, which accounted for 78% of the total vehicles, saw a sharp fall in February, while their exports grew. Exports, on the other hand, grew over 19% to 391,408 units.
Sales of scooters to dealers fell marginally to 512,783 units in February, while exports contracted 5.5% to 44,744 units. Companies manufactured 605,501 units of scooters during the month, up 6.7%.
