IMD warns of heat wave to severe heat wave over Gujarat on Wed, Thu

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has warned of heat wave to severe heat wave conditions in Gujarat on Wednesday and Thursday. It has also issued a heat wave warning for southwest Rajasthan and Konkan on Wednesday, Vidarbha on Thursday and Friday, Jharkhand from Friday to Sunday, and the Gangetic West Bengal on Sunday.
The weather agency sees a very high likelihood of warm night conditions in parts of Saurashtra and Kutch on Wednesday, and in Odisha on the weekend. Hot and humid weather is also likely in coastal Karnataka on Wednesday, the agency said.
On the general weather forecast for Holi, which will be celebrated on Friday, the weather bureau said a cloudy sky with the possibility of isolated light rain is seen over the plains of northewest India. Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is predicted over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, northeast India, some parts of Uttarakhand, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim, the department said. Dry weather is expected over the rest of the country on Holi, the bureau said.
A western disturbance seen as a cyclonic circulation over west Afghanistan is likely to bring fairly widespread to widespread light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh till Sunday, the department said. Scattered to fairly widespread light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is also seen over Uttarakhand from Thursday to Sunday, with a decline in intensity thereafter, the department said.
The weather agency expects a wet spell over Punjab, Haryana, west Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and east Uttar Pradesh till Sunday. Additionally, thunderstorm activities are likely over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and west Uttar Pradesh from Thursday to Sunday, and over Rajasthan on Friday and Saturday.
Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation lying over east Bangaldesh and its neighbourhood, fairly widespread to widespread light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is likely over Arunachal Pradesh till Saturday, the weather bureau said. Scattered to fairly widespread light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 km per hour is predicted over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya till Thursday, the weather department said.
A wet spell or light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 km per hour is is also likley over parts of the sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Sunday, the bureau said. Squally winds with the speeds of 50-60 km per hour are likely over parts of Tripura on Thursday, it said.
Squally winds occur in case of a sudden increase of wind speeds in squalls, with the increased speed reaching a minimum of 22 knots (40 km per hour), and persist for at least one minute.
Under the same weather system, heavy rainfall or snowfall is expected over parts of Arunchal Pradesh till Monday with the possibility of very heavy falls on Thursday, the department said. Isolated heavy rainfall is also seen over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday.
A cyclonic circulation lying over the west Equitorial Ocean and the adjoining Maldives is likey to lead to a wet spell accomapanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 km per hour over Kerala, Mahe, south interior Karnataka, Lakshwadeep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Wednesday.
The department also sees heavy rainfall over south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala, and Lakshwadeep on Wednesday. A wet spell is also predicted over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the next seven days, the weather agency said. End
