All India Sugar Trade body pegs 2024-25 output dn 19% on yr at 25.8 mln tn

NEW DELHI – The All India Sugar Trade Association estimates sugar production to fall 19.1% on year to 25.8 million tonnes in the ongoing sugar season ending September. Last year sugar output was 31.9 million tonnes.
Earlier in January, the trade body had estimated sugar production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) to be 26.5 million tonnes. However, the body has now revised down its production view by 700,000 tonnes to 25.8 million tonnes amid reduced output esttimates for Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
Maharashtra, India's top sugar producer, is expected to produce 8 million tonnes, down from 11 million tonnes last year. "Factories in Maharashtra are closing earlier than expected and sugar production in the state may not exceed 8 million tonnes," the trade body said in a release.
Output in Uttar Pradesh is seen at 9 million tonnes, down from 10.4 million tonnes. Karnataka is likely to produce 4.1 million tonnes, down from 5.3 million tonnes.
The trade body pegs sucrose diversion for ethanol production to be 3.8 million tonnes, up from 400,000 tonnes estimated earlier. With an opening stock of 7.9 million tonnes and estimated sugar output of 25.8 million tonnes, the total sugar availablity in 2024-25 is seen at 33.7 million tonnes. India needs about 29 million tonnes for sugar consumption requirement. The ongoing sugar season is likely to close with 3.7 million tonnes ending stock as of Sept. 30, according to the release. End
