--Lok Sabha passes 2nd batch of supplementary demands for grants for FY25
NEW DELHI – The Lok Sabha Tuesday passed the second batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), under which the government sought net INR 514.63 billion for additional spending during the year. Parliament had allowed net extra spending of INR 441.43 billion in the first batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants in December.
On gross basis, the government had sought permission for additional spending of INR 6.79 trillion in the second batch, out of which, INR 6.27 trillion will be met from enhanced receipts/recoveries of the ministries and departments. In December, the government had asked Parliament's nod to spend gross INR 877.63 billion extra.
While replying to the debate on demand for grants in the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government is committed to lower its debt. The FY26 Budget has said that the government would lower its debt-to-GDP ratio to 50% by March 2031, with a band of 100 basis points on either side. According to the Budget, the Centre's debt-to-GDP ratio in FY26 is seen falling to 56.1% from 57.1% in FY25.
Of the extra INR 514.73 billion expenditure, the government will spend INR 141 billion on fertiliser subsidy, INR 134.79 for the payment of pension of the government employees, including for the Unified Pension Scheme.
In the Budget for FY26, the government cut the estimate for total expenditure in FY25 to INR 47.17 trillion from INR 48.21 trillion. Till Januray, the government had spent INR 35.70 trillion, according to the latest data available with the Controller General of Accounts. End
