Indian telecom operators add subscribers in Dec after five-month gap

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI - Indian telecom operators added wireless subscribers for the first time six months in December, having lost around 20 million users since June. According to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, telecom operators added 2.01 million users on a net basis in December having lost 1.77 million subscribers in November.
Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Bharti Airtel added customers in December while subscribers continued to leave Vodafone Idea. Reliance Jio, India's biggest mobile telecom operator, net added 3.91 million subscribers in December, higher than the 1.21 million users added in November.
Bharti Airtel net added 1.03 million mobile subscribers in December after having lost 1.14 million users in the previous month. Vodafone Idea's subscriber count fell by another 1.72 million in the last month of 2024, after it had lost 1.50 million subscribers in November.
The government-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. lost 316,599 users in December, while Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.'s user count went down by 896,988 in December.
For mobile users, the market share of Reliance Jio as of Dec. 31 was 40.42%, slightly higher than 40.15% in November. Bharti Airtel's market share fell to 33.49% as of Dec. 31 from 33.45% the previous month. Vodafone Idea's market share was 18.01%, lower than 18.19% in November. Private players continue to dominate India's mobile subscriber market with a 91.92% market share, with BSNL and MTNL together taking up the remaining 8.08%.
Reliance Jio remained India's top broadband service provider, both in the wired and wireless segments, with a subscriber base of 476.58 million, followed by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea at 289.31 million and 126.38 million, respectively, as per the TRAI data.

ACTIVE SUBSCRIBERS
Total mobile subscribers in India as of Dec. 31 were 1.15 billion. Out of these, around 1.06 billion were active subscribers, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register. The register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network.
