India Apr-Feb freight traffic at major ports up 3.4% on year

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in the country rose 3.4% on year to 771.0 million tonnes in Apr-Feb, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. The rise was mainly driven by a 27.0% on year increase in miscellaneous cargo to 102.9 million tonnes.
Crude and petroleum products, which account for a little less than one-third of total cargo handled at all the major ports in the country, rose 2.2% on year to 227.6 million tonnes in Apr-Feb. Container traffic increased 6.3% to 176.0 million tonnes and thermal coal rose 0.4% on year to 116.2 million tonnes in Apr-Feb.
Coking coal traffic fell 9.4% on year at 54.0 million tonnes, while iron ore volumes declined 19.4% to 45.2 million tonnes. The finished fertiliser cargo for the first 11 months of 2024-25 rose 21.4% to 9.4 million tonnes and raw fertilisers increased 12.3% on year to 9.6 million tonnes.
Among the major ports, Paradip handled the highest traffic in Apr-Feb at 136.2 million tonnes, followed by Deendayal port at 133.8 million tonnes and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 83.8 million tonnes.
