NEW DELHI – The government registered as many as 158 cases against online gaming companies for tax evasion, with the total amount involved standing at INR 1.53 trillion, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Rajya Sabha Tuesday.

In a written reply, Chaudhary told the Rajya Sabha that a total of 91 show cause notices have been issued to online gaming firms. The total amount in question is INR 1.44 trillion. The cases and show cause notices are for the period starting July 2017 and up to January of this year.

In January this year, the Supreme Court stayed all tax notices to online gaming companies, with the matter scheduled to be heard next week on Mar. 18. The cases relate to challenges to the decision to retrospectively impose a 28% Goods and Services Tax on the full value of bets placed with online gaming firms instead of the gross gaming revenue.  End
