Global coffee prices up 14.3% on month at 354.32 cents per pound in Feb

MUMBAI – Global coffee prices rose 14.3% on month to 354.32 cents a pound in February, as per the International Coffee Organization's composite indicator of prices. During the month, the composite indicator fluctuated between 337.54 cents a pound and 375.00 cents a pound, with a median value of 353.19 cents a pound, the organisation said in a report.
The price of Colombian Milds coffee rose 16.7% on month to 410.64 cents a pound in February, and that of Other Milds rose 15.5% on month to 409.48 cents a pound. Brazilian Naturals appreciated 18.3% on month to 401.10 cents a pound, and Robustas was up 7.2% at 263.08 cents a pound. The New York Intercontinental Exchange market was the main driver of growth, with coffee contracts increasing 18% in February to 388.18 cents a pound. On the London Intercontinental Exchange, contracts rose 8.2%, averaging 253.48 cents a pound, as per the report.
The arbitrage between the London and New York futures markets expanded 42.4% to 134.70 cents a pound in February, the highest since June 2022, according to the report.
Global green beans exports in January fell 14.2% on year to 9.72 million bags (1 bag = 60 kg), the third consecutive month of contraction. Green bean exports of Robustas fell 27.5% on year to 3.7 million bags in January. Green bean exports of Brazilian Naturals were at 3.55 million bags, down 1% on year. Exports of Colombian Milds rose 1.3% on year to 1.01 million bags in January, the 16th consecutive month of growth for this coffee group, the report said. Shipments of Other Milds fell 11% on year in January to 1.46 million bags.
Total exports of soluble coffee fell 5.2% on year to 1.05 million bags in January. Brazil was the largest exporter of soluble coffee in January, shipping 370,000 bags, it said. Data for exports come with a month's lag.
Exports from South America fell 4.2% to 5.18 million bags in January, the second straight month of a decline for the region. Exports from Africa rose 7.1% on year to 1.1 million bags. Exports from Mexico and Central America rose 10.9% on year to 1.1 million bags in January, while exports from Asia and Oceania fell 31.9% to 3.44 million bags, the organisation said in its report.
Global coffee production in 2023-24 (Oct-Sep) is expected to have increased to 178 million bags, up from 168.2 million bags in the previous year, the report said. Consumption of coffee in 2023-24 is expected to have risen 2.2% on year to 177 million bags, which means the global coffee market is likely to have been left with a surplus of 1 million bags, as per the report.
