MUMBAI – The sowing of summmer crops across the country has reached 3.75 million hectares as of Friday, up 21.1% on year, according to data from the agriculture ministry released on Monday. The acreage under summer crops at the same period last year was 3.10 million hectares.
The area under rice, the largest summer crop, was 2.71 million hectares as of Thursday, up 11.5% on year from 2.43 million hectares a year ago. Similarly, the area under maize, which is the largest coarse cereal grown during the season, rose to 197,000 hectares from 153,500 hectares last year. The acreage under bajra, the second largest course cereal, also rose to 52,600 hectares from 33,000 hectares last year.
Rahul Chauhan, director of IGrain India, expects moong and maize acreage to increase in the current season. "Maize prices are attractive and in Madhya Pradesh, farmers prefer sowing moong in summer season," he said. Farmers prefer moong during the summer as it helps retain nitrogen levels in the soil, which is needed for kharif crops.
The area sown under all pulses rose substantially by 144.4% on year to 501,600 hectares from 205,200 hectares last year. Under pulses, moong acreage rose to 358,400 hectares from 133,700 hectares sown a year ago.
The area sown under urad also rose to 130,400 hectares from 63,300 hectares sown a year ago. The government has extended duty-free imports of urad by another year, till Mar. 31, 2026, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification on Monday. Earlier, the government had allowed duty-free import of the commodity till Mar. 31, 2025.
Oilseeds acreage was down at 250,700 hectares from 263,100 hectares sown in the previous year. The area under sesamum, the major summer oilseed crop, was at 78,400 hectares, higher than 76,900 hectares a year ago. On the other hand, groundnut acreage fell to 154,700 hectares from 167,000 hectares last year.
