MUMBAI/NEW DELHI – India's food grain output this kharif season is estimated at a record 166.4 million tonnes due to record production of rice, maize, groundnut and soybean, according to the second advance estimate for 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) released by the government on Monday. In the previous kharif season, food grain output was 154.2 million tonnes.

"The crop area received from the states has been validated and triangulated with information received from Remote Sensing, Weekly Crop Weather Watch Group and other agencies," the farm ministry said in the release.

The Centre has pegged the 2024-25 rabi food grain output at 164.5 million tonnes compared to 155.2 million tonnes, according to the release.

The country's rice output this kharif season is pegged at 120.7 million tonnes compared to 111.5 million tonnes the previous year, and the rabi crop is seen at 15.8 million tonnes compared to 12.4 million tonnes.

Kharif maize production is seen at 24.8 million tonnes, against 22.7 million tonnes, while the rabi output is seen at 12.4 million tonnes compared to 9.7 million tonnes, according to the data.

For kharif tur, the output this year is estimated at 3.5 milion tonnes compared to 3.3 million tonnes in the last year. Chana output in 2024-25 is pegged at 11.5 million tonnes against 12.2 mln tn last year, but higher than the average gram production from 2018-19 to 2022-23. Chana is the largest variety of pulses crop grown during the rabi season.

The government has pegged kharif oilseed output at 27.6 million tonnes against 22.8 million tonnes, and rabi output at 14.0 million tonnes compared to 13.8 million tonnes a year ago. The production of soybean is estimated at 15.1 million tonnes compared to 12.6 million tonnes and production of rapeseed and mustard is estimated at 12.9 million tonnes, up from 12.7 last year, it said.

Sugarcane production is pegged at 435.1 million tonnes compared to 446.4 million tonnes and cotton output is seen at 29.4 million bales, against 32.3 million bales in the previous year. One cotton bale is 170 kg.

Jute production is estimated at 8.3 million bales. One bale of jute is 180 kg.

While preparing the kharif crop production estimates, the crop cutting experiments based-yield has been considered. The rabi crop production is based on the average yield and is subject to changes in the successive estimates on the receipt of better yield estimates based on crop cutting experiments, according to the release. The production of various summer crops will be included in the third advance estimates, it said.

These estimates have been primarily prepared on the basis of information received from states. The second advance estimates covers kharif and rabi season, and the summer season shall be incorporated in the third advance estimates.

The following table details the second advance crop estimates for 2024-25 and 2023-24 second advance production estimates for key crops (in mln tn). It also details the change in percentage terms in the second advance estimate for 2024-25 and estimates for 2023-24:
