IMD issues heatwave warning for Gujarat till Wed, Rajasthan on Tue, Wed

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning for Gujarat till Wednesday, southwest Rajasthan for Tuesday and Wednesday, Vidarbha from Tuesday to Thursday, and Odisha for Thursday and Friday. The department also said hot and humid weather is likely in Konkan, Goa, Kerala, Mahe, and coastal Karnataka till Wednesday.
A heatwave occurs when temperatures reach at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees Celsius in coastal regions, and 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions.
Under the influence of a western disturbance seen as a cyclonic circulation over west Iran, scattered to fairly wide-spread light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh on Monday, the weather department said. Isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall is also predicted over parts of the same regions on Monday, it said.
A fresh western disturbance is likely to lead to similar weather conditions over the same areas from Wednesday to Friday, the agency said. Scattered light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is also seen over Uttarakhand during the same period, it said.
Under the same weather system, isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall is predicted over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Thursday and Friday, and over Himachal Pradesh on Friday, the weather bureau said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is also expected over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan during the same period, the bureau said.
A cyclonic circulation over Assam is expected to cause isolated light to moderate rainfall or snowfall over Arunachal Pradesh on Monday, IMD said. Scattered to fairly widespread light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 km per hour are predicted over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Trupira from Tuesday to Friday, the department said.
The gusty winds are likely to increase to 40-50 km per hour over Assam and Meghalaya on Wednesday, the weather agency said. A wet spell with thunderstorms and lightning is seen over Arunchal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim from Tuesday to Thursday. The department also expects heavy rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh from Tuesday to Friday, and over Assam and Meghalaya on Wednesday and Thursday.
Under the influence of easterly wave activity, the weather bureau sees scattered to fairly widespread light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till Wednesday, and over Kerala, Mahe, south interior Karnataka, and Lakshwadeep from Tuesday to Thursday.
The department also sees heavy to very heavy rainfall over south Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, and heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kairakal, Kerala, and Mahe on Tuesday and Wednesday. A wet spell is also predicted over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the next seven days, the weather agency said.
The weather bureau sees a gradual rise in maximum temperatures over the plains of northwest India, central India, Gujarat, east India, and Maharashtra in the next few days. No change in maximum temperatures is likely over the rest of the country, the weather bureau said. End
