NEW DELHI – The cost of a home-cooked non-vegetarian thali rose 6% on year in February, while the cost of a vegetarian thali fell 1%, CRISIL's Market Intelligence and Analytics division said in a release Monday. The price of a non-vegetarian meal in Februaury was INR 57.4, while that of a vegetarian meal was INR 27.2, it said.

Vegetarian meal price fell mainly due to a decline in tomato and liquid petroleum gas prices. Tomato prices declined 28% on year to INR 23 per kg last month due to a 20% on-year increase in arrivals, the report said. An 11% on-year fall in LPG cost to INR 803 per 14.2 kg cylinder in Delhi also provided some relief to households.

However, the cost of vegetarian meals remained high due to on-year price rise in onion 11%, potato 16%, and cooking oil 18%.

Meanwhile, the cost of non-vegetarian thali rose 6% on year in Februaury, driven by a 15% on-year rise in broiler rates. Cost of chicken rose sharply due to low base of last year, and elevated feed cost driven by a 6% on-year rise in maize prices. Broiler rates account for 50% of the non-vegetarian thali cost.

However, on month, the cost of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis declined 5% in February. Onion, potato, and tomato prices were down 7%, 17%, and 25% on month, respectively, amid rise in supply of fresh arrivals. Broiler prices declined 5% on month because of lower demand amid bird flu scare in southern India, the report said.  End
